There are many reasons why your existing gas central heating system may not be working as efficiently as it should be and many of these problems can easily and effectively be fixed by a trained heating engineer.
A few examples of common heating problems are:
- Radiators cold at the top or a bubbling noise - This could mean that your radiator needs air bleeding from the system.
- Radiators cold at the bottom and hot nearer the top - This could mean there may be a buildup of sludge in your system and your system will need to be power flushed.
- Both of these problems stop your system working efficiently and can cost you extra money in heating bills.

Power flushing
Power flushing is a term used within the industry to chemically clean a central heating system. Once chemicals have been added a machine is used to create a high velocity of water that clears the debris out of the system. When carrying out a power flush you should expect the water to be tested for TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) The aim is to get the system to around 100 parts per million of the cold mains water when measuring the TDS. Once the water within the system is clean enough a chemical will be added to prevent the sludge forming again.
Landlord Safety Certificates
In 1996 the government created a law in which all landlords who rent part, or all of a property, have to have all gas appliances and pipes checked every 12 months with a certificate to prove it.

A registered engineer will check the following:
- Check appliance for gas leaks
- Check pressure of both standing and working
- Check stats against manufacturers data
- Check for satisfactory, necessary ventilation
- Test flue flow
- Check operation of all the flame failure devices
- Check for physical stability, presence and effectiveness of stability brackets
- Investigate any evidence of unsafe operation and report to a responsible person
